According to what I've noticed and skim in other sources, the oval (P) evidence mark wasn't launched until finally Shooting accessories 1908. Previous to that point, Winchester marked “OF” (outdoors equipped) on the bottom with the barrel under the forend inventory with the mail get barrels. I have see various of them on Model 1885 Solitary Shot Rifles that predate 1908.

Receivers built after 1905 acquiring no “WP” evidence but have barrels With all the “WP” and “Oval P” mark would point out a mail buy barrel.

During the war Winchester experienced borrowed greatly to finance its huge growth. While using the return of peace, the organization attempted to utilize its surplus production capacity, and pay out down its financial debt, by striving to be a normal maker of customer goods: every little thing from kitchen knives to roller skates to refrigerators, being promoted by means of “Winchester Stores.” They merged with the Simmons Components Firm. The Winchester and Keen Kutter brands did organization together over the nineteen twenties but in 1929 they agreed to independent and returned for their core business enterprise.
